What Is The Way Home About?

At its core, The Way Home is about three generations of women in the Landry family: matriarch Del (Andie MacDowell), her daughter Kat (Chyler Leigh), and Kat’s teenage daughter Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow). Set in the fictional town of Port Haven, the series blends small-town charm with a major time travel twist.

The original spark for the show came from co-creator Marly Reed, who once asked herself in college: “If you could meet your mom when she was your age, would you be friends with her?” That question stayed with her for more than a decade until she developed it into the concept we now know as The Way Home.

If you want to get really deep into the time travel weeds, Reed and the writing team grounded the show in what physicists call the Novikov self-consistency principle, which is the idea that if you go back in time, you were always part of that timeline. In practice, that means Alice can witness her family’s past and even interact with it, but she can’t undo it. Instead, time travel becomes a way for the Landry women to finally understand each other and heal old wounds. (We know, its hard to wrap your brain around!)

When Does The Way Home Arrive on Netflix?

  • Seasons 1 & 2 of The Way Home will be available on Netflix starting on October 1
  • Season 3 will be available on Netflix in February 2026
  • Season 4 will be available on Netflix in late 2026 after the series airs on Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Plus.

If you want to watch the newest season of The Way Home, you’ll still find them on Hallmark Channel or streaming next-day on Hallmark+.

Meet the Cast of The Way Home

  • Andie MacDowell as Del Landry – The strong, complicated grandmother holding her family together. Producers knew she was the one for Del the moment her name came up.
  • Chyler Leigh as Kat Landry – A single mom returning to her hometown in search of answers. The creators loved her balance of humor, vulnerability, and strength.
  • Sadie Laflamme-Snow as Alice – The teen who discovers the magical pond and becomes the heart of the story.
  • Evan Williams as Elliot Augustine – Kat’s childhood best friend and Alice’s time-travel ally.

Casting was a challenge because the show needed not just present-day actors but also their teenage counterparts in 1999. The team worked carefully to match looks and even mannerisms across generations.

The Look and Feel of the Show

One of the things that sets The Way Home apart is how carefully the production team built two believable worlds: 1999 and today.

  • Cinematography: Cinematographer Thom Best used vintage Hasselblad lenses from his father’s collection to film the ’90s sequences, creating a warm, nostalgic glow. The present day, by contrast, is shot with a cooler palette to reflect family conflict and loss.
  • Production Design: The Landry home literally changes with the decades. In 1999, Del’s kitchen has wood cabinets, a white fridge, and rooms full of kid clutter. In the present, the same spaces are modernized with painted cabinets and stainless steel appliances.
  • Props: Details matter — from Colton’s lovingly personalized guitar to Jacob’s Polaroid photos (aged just enough to look handled but cherished). Teen Kat’s room is filled with boy-band posters and tiny purses, while modern Kat’s life feels stripped back and subdued.

All of these choices help viewers instantly recognize when they’re in the past and when they’re in the present, even before a character speaks a word.
