Luke Macfarlane has become one of Hallmark’s most recognizable and reliable leading men, even as his career continues to grow well beyond the network. Between film roles, television work, and unscripted projects, he remains genuinely booked and busy – yet about once a year, he still finds his way back to Hallmark. For fans, that consistency has made Luke Macfarlane Hallmark movies something to look forward to rather than take for granted.

A Hallmark Career That’s Expanded Alongside Other Work

Luke Macfarlane made his Hallmark debut in The Memory Book (2014) and went on to become a steady presence in the network’s movie lineup, appearing in both holiday titles and year-round romances.

At the same time, Luke has continued building a parallel career outside the network. He’s remained active in television series, studio films, and later streaming projects, allowing him to move between genres and formats.

Why Luke Macfarlane Stepped Away from Hallmark (and Came Back)

In September 2022, Luke Macfarlane suggested that his time with Hallmark might be coming to a close. Speaking with The Los Angeles Times while filming what was then titled A MagicalChristmas Village – his 14th movie for the network – Luke acknowledged that he felt he had reached a natural stopping point.

“They’ve been very good to me, but I think I’ve told my story for now with those folks,” he said, before adding with a self-aware laugh, “I mean, how many firefighters can I play?”

At the time, the comments felt definitive. Luke wasn’t criticizing Hallmark or distancing himself from the network; he was expressing creative fatigue and a desire to explore new kinds of roles. In the years since, his career has expanded in exactly that direction – yet his return to Hallmark with 2023’s Notes of Autumn suggests the door was never quite closed.

Hallmark+ and Home Is Where the Heart Is

One of Luke Macfarlane’s most notable recent Hallmark projects wasn’t a movie at all. In 2025, he starred in – and executive produced – the Hallmark+ original unscripted series Home Is Where the Heart Is, which aired exclusively on the platform and is currently available to stream in its six-episode first season.

The series centers on restoring inherited or deeply meaningful homes, blending renovation with personal storytelling. For Luke, the project was a natural fit. A longtime woodworker, he brought hands-on experience to the show in addition to his on-screen presence. Speaking with Variety in January 2025, Luke Macfarlane explained the connection plainly: “I’ve always been a builder and a maker, and woodworking is my sort of material.”

Because Home Is Where the Heart Is aired exclusively on Hallmark+, it likely hasn’t been seen by as many viewers as it deserves. The series offers a quieter, more intimate kind of storytelling – one that feels well aligned with Hallmark’s core audience – and it’s easy to imagine it resonating even more widely with a traditional Hallmark Channel airing.

Recent Appearances That Show Where His Career Is Headed

In recent months, Luke has made a handful of high-profile appearances that underscore how comfortably he now moves between Hallmark and the wider entertainment landscape. He appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen alongside his Platonic co-star Rose Byrne, where Hallmark movies came up in conversation. While the genre received its usual light teasing, Luke handled the moment with humor and ease, speaking positively about the network and his experience there – a reminder that even as his career expands, he doesn’t distance himself from the work that introduced him to many viewers.

He also appeared in early December 2025 on a holiday-themed episode of The Weakest Link titled “Holiday Heroes.” The episode featured several familiar Hallmark faces, including Jonathan Bennett and Rachael Leigh Cook, placing Luke among peers who have similarly bridged Hallmark and mainstream pop culture. Together, these appearances highlight how his visibility extends beyond the network while remaining closely connected to it.

Looking Ahead: Representation and What’s Next

Luke Macfarlane has been clear about his interest in helping expand the kinds of stories Hallmark tells. In an interview with Variety in August 2025, he shared that he’s developing an LGBTQ Christmas movie for the network — a project he described as thoughtful and still in long-term development. While he has appeared in both gay and straight roles throughout his Hallmark career, this marks a deeper level of creative involvement.

Rather than framing the project as a departure from Hallmark’s brand, Luke emphasized that inclusive stories naturally fit within the network’s existing approach. He spoke about queer stories as reflections of everyday life – friends, family members, and neighbors – and suggested that these stories belong comfortably alongside the romances and traditions Hallmark viewers already enjoy.

While the film remains in development, the news alone is encouraging. It signals continued growth for the network and gives fans something to look forward to: more inclusive holiday storytelling that still feels unmistakably Hallmark.
