Why You Should Watch When Calls the Heart Season 12
When Calls the Heart is Hallmark’s longest running original series and season 12 just premiered on January 5, 2025. Although we’ve never watched a single episode, the show has a very dedicated fandom. We took to the streets, aka our Girls Gone Hallmark Facebook group to find out what people love about When Calls the Heart and why you should tune in for season 12.
Characters That Feel Like Family
According to dedicated viewers, the characters in Hope Valley aren’t just well-written – they become like extended family members. The show’s protagonist, Elizabeth Thornton, has grown from a fish-out-of-water city teacher to a beloved community pillar. Viewers have followed her through love, loss, and personal growth, making her journey feel authentic and relatable.
Our Facebook Group Members definitely had some thoughts on their favorite characters!
The supporting cast is equally compelling, with each character having their own meaningful story arcs. Although we can’t claim to fully understand, we know that many Hearties have strong feelings about the Lucas vs. Nathan of it all.
And people really love the actors who portray these characters, which of course keeps them coming back to the show season after season.
A Refreshing Escape to Simpler Times
In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, When Calls the Heart offers a welcome respite. Set in the early 20th century, Hope Valley presents a world where community matters more than convenience, and face-to-face conversations trump social media updates.
Viewers appreciate how the show tackles real-life challenges while maintaining its wholesome, family-friendly approach. Each episode delivers:
- Heartwarming stories that remind us of the importance of human connection
- Gorgeous period costumes and set designs that transport viewers to a different era
- Meaningful life lessons without excessive drama or complexity
- Clean entertainment suitable for multiple generations to enjoy together
The Perfect Show for Both Binge-Watching and Weekly Viewing
Whether you’re looking to dive into eleven seasons of content or join the weekly watch parties for season 12, When Calls the Heart accommodates both viewing styles. The show’s episodic structure means you can enjoy individual episodes while still following the larger seasonal arcs.
For newcomers, starting from the beginning allows you to witness the full evolution of Hope Valley and its residents. However, the show’s accessible storytelling means you can also jump into recent episodes without feeling completely lost.
A Community Beyond the Screen
Perhaps one of the most compelling reasons to start watching is the vibrant fan community. From Facebook groups to fan conventions, the show has fostered genuine connections among viewers who share a love for Hope Valley’s wholesome storytelling.

I am not a When Calls the Heart viewer/fan, but I do follow the phenomenon that it is. I grew up in the days of radio serials. In many ways, WCTH reminds me of these radio programs because of the lack of drama for its own sake and character development. Unfortunately, on today’s TV soaps, characters come and go regularly, age at the drop of a hat and even seem to change character completely if the storyline calls for it. Disconcerting to say the least. Radio serials lasted years and years, characters aged accordingly, and the audience didn’t seem to mind at all. I can’t see WCTH having that kind of longevity as Hallmark audiences today seem to want characters to stay young forever. Thanks for listening.
