Tamera Mowry-Housley on Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Prelude to a Wedding

We got ten minutes with Tamera Mowry-Housley the day before Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Prelude to a Wedding premieres, and reader, we used every second of it. This Tamera Mowry-Housley interview covers how she actually learned to play the violin for Gethsemane Brown, where she lands on the Griff vs. Detective O’Reilly of it all, what changed with a new director and new writers on movie number four — and a little intel about the Christmas movie she’s shooting with Kris Polaha.

Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Prelude to a Wedding premieres Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 8/7c on Hallmark Channel, and streams on Hallmark+ the day after.

Yes, that’s really Tamera playing the violin

If you’ve wondered whether the violin is movie magic — it is not. Tamera picked it up because of Gethsemane, and it started with a note she could not sing.

“It was so scratchy when I did it. I was like, this is bad. This is, like, really bad,” she told us, remembering a scene in the first movie where Gethsemane demonstrates a note for her students. Producer Joel Rice offered her lessons, warning her that the violin is one of the most challenging instruments to learn. Her answer: “All right, let’s go.”

Four movies later, she’s playing on camera. “In the beginning of ‘The Wedding Song’ — that’s me. I’m actually playing it,” she said. “And you can see, I’ve got the posture. It’s so much better than when I did the first one.”

She also gave Hallmark credit for making that possible: “Hallmark has been a place where I can continue to learn, grow, as a person and an actress.” (And if any violinists out there have notes, she says she’s open to hearing them. Be nice.)

Team Griff or Team O’Reilly? Tamera answers

We asked her to pick a side in the love triangle, and she immediately said what every one of us was thinking: “I don’t know if I’m gonna get in trouble, Megan.”

She started out firmly Team Griff, and her reasoning is airtight. “He’s a teacher, even though he’s a math teacher. I’m a music teacher. He works right across the hall. He cooks for me. He’s so gorgeous. It’s a no-brainer.” She singled out the piano scene in this one — “science meets poetry” — as the moment Griff finally gets to shine. “Literally, I was shaking in my boots when we were shooting it.”

And then Detective O’Reilly happened. “Something surprising happened,” she said, pointing to a flirty bit of EpiPen banter (you’ll know it when you see it). “I think he excites her in a way that Griff doesn’t. There’s something rugged and hot and different about Detective O’Reilly. He will beat somebody up for Gethsemane. And Megan, that’s hot.”

Her pitch for movie five: an ex shows up to shake things loose, and Gethsemane finally makes a move. “I think it’s time for her to make a move. I want to see a beautiful budding romance.”

A new director and new writers on movie four

Prelude to a Wedding is the first Haunted Harmony movie without Linda-Lisa Hayter, who directed the first three, and Tamera admitted the change gave her a jolt. “When you’re used to familiarity… you’re like, oh no. How is this one going to be?” With Linda-Lisa, she said, they’ve built a shorthand: “She knows exactly what to say to get me there.”

But she came around fast. “There’s also something beautiful about having someone new. They give you a new spin on it, a new perspective.”

The thing she loves most about this installment is how contained it is. Instead of touring the Irish countryside, Prelude to a Wedding mostly parks everyone in one location — and that, she says, is the point. “Staying in one place feels more like a mystery. Like Clue. Everyone’s all in the same place. A locked room. Who did it? Which one? Who?”

She also thinks it looks different. “It felt a little eerie,” she said of the lighting and cinematography, “and the fact that this person died and everyone is amongst the killer, and you just don’t know who it is.”

As for Gethsemane herself, four movies in: “She’s confident. She knows where she is. She knows what she does and she knows she’s good at it. She’s still gonna have fun with it. She doesn’t know these people, but she’s gonna pretend like she does.”

About that Christmas movie with Kris Polaha

Tamera is currently shooting Mistletoe and Mimosas (working title) opposite Kris Polaha, from a script by Russell Hainline. Here’s the fun part, and we think this is news: she told us Linda-Lisa Hayter — her Haunted Harmony director for the first three movies — is directing it.

Her review of her co-star was short and extremely to the point: “He’s just scrumptious. He is amazing.”

What we still want: more ghosts, fewer bodies

We told Tamera what we’ve been saying on the show for a while now — that the Gethsemane and Eamon chemistry is so good it could carry a full Ghost Whisperer-style series, no murder required. She’s into it. Hallmark, the ball is in your court.
