Listener Mailbag: Heated Rivalry Review…Coming to Girls Gone Hallmark?
You wrote in. We read it all. And then we talked about it… probably longer than necessary. This month’s Listener Mailbag episode is packed with passionate opinions, thoughtful critiques, Hallmark-adjacent chaos, one extremely important wardrobe malfunction, and at least one voicemail that deserves its own fan club. We’re digging into Ripple confusion, January movie takes, Hallmark-but-not-Hallmark viewing suggestions, Missing the Boat minutiae, and a few gentle-but-firm questions about why Hallmark insists everyone must be emotionally orphaned to fall in love. Grab your beverage of choice – this one is very “pull up a chair and let’s chat.”

Alison Would Like a Number, Please
Alison wrote in with a very fair (and honestly necessary) question: Did Ripple ever get a rating? The confusion makes total sense. Ripple landed right in the middle of Christmas movie overload and we stacked an episodic series on top of an already packed review schedule. While we didn’t assign ratings to the individual episodes, we did land on an official series rating: 5/5. We really enjoyed it overall and are absolutely hoping for a season two.
Francisco Watched Two Movies and Has Thoughts (Good Ones!)
Francisco checked in with a thoughtful recap of January’s lineup, including Lost in Paradise and Caught by Love. He might be the mayor of Reasonable Hallmark Opinions. We dig into his love for Lacey’s comedic timing, the genuinely surprising pirate element, the emotional distress caused by wondering what happened to Giani, and why an ending where no one gives up their dreams is not only okay, but refreshing.
Hallmark Adjacent, But Make It a Movement
Paula came in hot with Hallmark-adjacent viewing suggestions that range from Netflix comfort food to HBO prestige joy. From Nonna’s (Hallmark vibes with Vince Vaughn) to Nobody Wants This (a rabbi and a sex podcaster walk into a relationship…) to Somebody, Somewhere, which may be one of the most quietly beautiful shows on television – we talk about what counts as Hallmark-adjacent and whether theatrical releases like Win a Date With Tad Hamilton deserve retroactive Hallmark sainthood.
We also got an Instagram DM asking if we’d consider reviewing Heated Rivalry. Um…
Missing the Boat: Italy, Aging Romances, and a Dress That Needed Weights
We talk about why Missing the Boat worked emotionally, especially with two age-appropriate romances (a win!), Kristoffer Polaha’s charming subtlety, and scenery so dreamy it demands immediate gelato consumption. But then… the dress. The wind. The ballooning fabric. A distraction that could have been solved with one very basic royal-family trick. We also dive into Jenny’s larger observation: does every Hallmark lead truly need a dead parent to be emotionally compelling?
Mackie Confirms What We Suspected All Along
Finally, Mackie swoops in with receipts. That waterfall in Missing the Boat? Not real. Kristoffer Polaha himself confirmed it in an interview, and we discuss whether this information changes anything (emotionally? spiritually? cinematically?) or simply gives us closure.
Until Next Time…
